Accessory spleen in the greater omentum found incidentally during cancer surgeryElmira Jumazade1, Khayala Bakhshaliyeva2, Elyar Baghirov3, Leyla Aliyeva1, Elmir Asgerov31Department of Forensic Medicine and Pathological Anatomy, Azerbaijan State Advanced Training Institute for Doctors, Baku, Azerbaijan2Bureau of Pathological Anatomy, Unification of Forensic Medical Expertise and Pathological Anatomy, Baku, Azerbaijan 3Department of General Surgery and Organ Transplantation, Central Hospital of Oil-Workers, Baku, Azerbaijan We incidentally found an accessory spleen during gross pathological examination of the greater omentum of a 58-year-old female patient who underwent omentectomy for a debulking procedure. The lymphoid follicles and splenic pulp were observed under the microscopic examination to confirm that it was a splenic tissue. This patient was previously diagnosed with endometrial adenocarcinoma four years ago. At the time of hospital admission, our patient had no symptoms indicative of splenic abnormalities. Accessory spleens are typically found in the splenic pedicle and splenic hilum, but they may also rarely be seen in the greater omentum. It should be considered in the differential diagnosis of the lesions in the greater omentum.
